The Frida Kahlo School in Schweich is an inclusive school in which students with and without disabilities are taught and encouraged to interact with one another in a carefree manner and to learn with joy.
The three-part work canon MIRROR, MIRROR… in the foyer, CANON OF COLORS in the cafeteria and COLORFUL VIEW in the outdoor area create a meaningful connection between these three locations. They appeal to the senses with simple and familiar means. The development of ideas has its origins in the work of the artist Frida Kahlo and at the same time abstracts it: strong colors and self-portraits – here in the form of mirror images – come from her works and motifs; they encourage perception and self-observation – also in the group.

MIRROR, MIRROR…
A floor-to-ceiling mirror in the foyer is the first thing you see when you enter the school building. Made of shiny, polished stainless steel, it extends from the corner of the room at the entrance to the seating area. It surprises by leaving the flat surface and throwing up a large wave that leads to various refractions and distortions of the reflection.
The children gather in the foyer at different times in the morning and are picked up there by their teacher. During this time of waiting, they can see themselves and others in the mirror and create new distortions of the image through movement. This enables playful and sometimes very funny self-observation.
Frida Kahlo depicted and processed the injury to her body in over fifty self-portraits. She did not shy away from looking at herself, but rather met herself and her impairments with openness and surprising joie de vivre. She adorned herself with flowers, animals and plants and showed the simultaneity of beauty and injury or otherness.
